High crime rates, staggering unemployment and political upheaval mean that the country is no place for old people with no income. The state does not provide, except for the smallest of contributions, it is a non-welfare society that does not hold up the fallen – there are too many of them.

Mr Van Der Linde, now 81 years old, a retired pensioner living in a small unit in the Protea Retirement Village just outside Centurion worked his whole life as an honest contributing member of the society, never crossing the societal line of dishonesty and never a drain – always employed and always honest. Settled down into a retirement village in the quiet suburb of Centurion, he thought he had saved enough to make his final days comfortable. Then…..along came the glib Dr David Stephen Grieve and his wife Sanet Grieve Botha – convincingly, they went into the sanctity of the retirement village, into the life of old retired Mr A Van Der Linde, and presented to him a prepared proposal – a financial investment (just too good to be true….) from Dr DS Grieve Bridging Solutions Ltd, designed, made and manufactured to lure, convince and entice him into parting with his money….

Phoney contracts, bogus business cards and a well oiled “snake-oil”” financial proposal in a wonderful encouraging document holder – and then three hours after sitting in his little retirement unit with him, the Grieve duo left, with Mr Van Der Linde’s life savings in the form of a cheque in their hands……moving on to the next victim, and the victim thereafter and so on and so on and so on…….the choicest targets were trusting elderly patients and former patients of Dr DS Grieve whose trust he already enjoyed, the old, the infirm,  the isolated,  especially the compartmentalised elderly, retired and “family, fools and friends” groups.

SA Fraud Investigations interviewed retired old pensioner Mr Van Der Linde who was in a dreadful state.

“My life is almost over and now in these closing days – someone I trusted, Dr DS Grieve and his wife Sanet Grieve Botha have stolen all my money….”.

“Dr DS Grieve and his wife Sanet Grieve Botha, came into the retirement village with the purpose of catching me, and even right into my small retirement unit and promised me that my money was safe, they promised to look after me, they promised me together that I would be able to count on this income in my final days. Today I am almost destitute, even reduced to eating low cost budget pet food. The journalist from the newspaper cried when she came to see me. But I have been let down, let down by Dr DS Grieve, let down by the liquidator Mr Dewald Breytenbach, let down by the courts, let down by the people from HPCSA (Health Professionals Council of SA) Mr Charles Lamola and Mr Cliff Nkuna, let down by the newspaper reporter Monica Laganparsad from the Sunday Times who promised to expose this and didn’t, let down by the lawyers and let down by society who should have prosecuted this man and his wife long ago – this is their second Ponzi scheme!!!!!!!.”.

“They had a comfort caller, their sister in law – Ina Papenfus, who used to call me regularly, and even long afterwards to pacify me and tell me stories of how they had invested the interest on my money and how my money was multiplying and doing so well. It was all lies – she was just another cog in the machinery of the fraud – then all of a sudden she just stopped calling. She knew they had defrauded me, I am convinced of it. She just played along. I always thought she was a nice girlie – I did not know that she was part of the crooks and so dishonest and deceitful”.

“The only person that did not let me down was a relative of Dr DS Grieve,  who also got cheated and defrauded of his life savings, and who got hold of me right at the start, who offered me some help and who also called me regularly from New Zealand to make sure that I had food and could pay my bills, he also even offered to send me small amounts of money…and came to visit me several times when he came to South Africa to find out what had happened. He even paid for a private investigator and lawyer to see me and still phones me regularly”.

“My days and nights were always secure, then this man Dr DS Grieve and his wife Sanet stole my money, they took my joy and all my happiness……everyday is a struggle for me now and I worry every minute of every hour of every day, how will I survive….”. “I don’t have a computer, I have no fax machine and only get information from the newspapers.
